What is the ECO Scheme?

Oil Boiler Grants are available from the Government's ECO SchemeThe ECO Scheme is a Government initiative designed to help low income households save money on their heating bills. It does this by providing oil boiler grants and LPG boiler grants to replace faulty and inefficient boilers with more energy efficient ones.

By replacing old, inefficient boilers with new A-rated boilers you will not only cut your heating bills, you’ll also reduce carbon emissions from your home. This helps the Government to meet its carbon emission reduction targets.

The ECO Scheme also provides grants to replace faulty or inefficient electric storage heaters and to install cavity wall insulation or loft insulation. Oil Boiler Grants and LPG Boiler Grants are available in England, Scotland and Wales and they are non-repayable.

ECO Scheme 2018

The current version of the ECO Scheme is due to end in September 2018. However, the Government has indicated that it may continue after that date with a greater emphasis on tackling fuel poverty suffered by low income households.

ECO funding for replacement gas boilers has been severely restricted and may not be available to all new applicants. Oil boiler grants and LPG boiler grants are not affected and a Government announcement is expected over the coming months.

Are Free Oil Boilers still available from the ECO Scheme?

Yes, for many applicants.

Most applicants who qualify for oil boiler grants will get a free boiler installed with funding from the ECO Scheme.

However, we can’t calculate the value of oil boiler grants exactly until we have carried out a Free Survey of your home and your heating system. We will then be able to advise you whether you will receive a free oil boiler or whether there may be a small contribution to make.

The older and less efficient your existing oil boiler is, the greater your oil boiler grant could be, and the more likely you are to qualify for free A-rated oil boiler than a subsidised one. Also, larger and older properties tend to attract higher oil boiler grants than small, modern homes.

You can check whether you are eligible for an oil boiler grant by completing the short online form.

Who Qualifies for Oil Boiler Grants?

To qualify for an Oil Boiler Grant you must meet ALL 3 of the following criteria:

Which areas are covered by the ECO Scheme?

The Government’s ECO Scheme provides heating and insulation grants in England, Scotland and Wales.

Householders who live in areas without mains gas have to rely on other, more expensive forms of heating such as Oil Boilers, LPG boilers or Electric Storage Heaters.

The map below shows which areas of the UK are likely to have no mains gas supply. The darker the blue shading the less likely an area is to have a mains gas supply.

We have been helping householders to apply for ECO Scheme Grants since the scheme started in 2013 and the areas where householders are more likely to qualify for Oil Boiler Grants are:

10 Things You Should Know About Oil Boiler Grants

  1. The ECO Scheme provides oil boiler grants to help low income households reduce their heating bills.

Millions of home owners and tenants are struggling to pay their heating bills in the UK and one of the biggest reasons is that their homes have old, inefficient or faulty boilers or poor insulation. The ECO Scheme can help people like you if you receive one of the qualifying State Benefits or Tax Credits, by offering Oil Boiler Grants, LPG Boiler Grants and Insulation Grants.

  2. Oil Boiler Grants are funded by the main energy companies.

Large energy companies place a levy on every domestic electricity bill in the UK and the money collected is diverted into the ECO Fund. Accredited ECO installers are paid out of this fund to install free oil boilers or subsidised oil boilers in homes where householders qualify for Oil Boiler Grants.

  3. Oil Boiler Grants may not be available after September 2018.

As it stands, the current version of the ECO Scheme is due to end in September 2018 so it is very important for householders who may qualify for Oil Boiler Grants to apply straight away. The Government has indicated that ECO could continue but there is no guarantee and in the past, each time ECO has been extended funding has been reduced.

  4. Which other grants are available from the ECO Scheme?

ECO Scheme grants include Oil Boiler Grants, LPG Boiler Grants, Electric Storage Heater Grants, Cavity Wall Insulation Grants and Loft Insulation Grants. Although ECO Grants are still available to replace gas boilers, funding has been restricted and we may not be able to process all applications for gas boiler grants.

  5. Which makes of Oil Boiler are paid for by Oil Boiler Grants?

Most of the recognised makes of oil boiler can be installed under the ECO Scheme but our installers tend to install either Grant™ Oil Boilers or Worcester Bosch™ Oil Boilers.

Oil Boiler Grants are available to install Grant Oil Boilers under the ECO Scheme

Grant Oil Boilers are endorsed by the Energy Savings Trust and have achieved Which? Best Buy status. Grant Vortex and Grant Vortex Blue oil-fired condensing boilers are all A-rated for energy efficiency and are available with 12kW to 70kW outputs.

Oil Boiler Grants are available to install Worcester Bosch Oil Boilers with funding from the ECO Scheme

Worcester Bosch oil-fired boilers have achieved the Royal Warrant as well as the Which? Best Buy award. The Worcester Greenstar Heatslave or Danesmoor ranges are available as Combi, System or Regular condensing oil boilers and are all A-Rated for energy efficiency.

  6. You must be a home owner or private tenant to qualify for an Oil Boiler Grant

Only householders who live in their own homes and those who rent from private landlords will qualify for oil boiler grants. Unfortunately, if your home is owned by your local council or a housing association, or it is a shared-ownership home, you will not qualify for an oil boiler grant.

  7. Oil Boiler Grants are only available for homes in England, Scotland and Wales

Oil Boiler Grants from the ECO Scheme are only available for householders who live in England, Scotland and Wales. We cover all of mainland England, Scotland and Wales plus Anglesey, for oil boiler grants and LPG boiler grants. Householders who live in Northern Ireland have a separate scheme and more information is available from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) at www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/grant-to-replace-your-boiler.

  8. Are Oil Boilers installed free of charge under the ECO Scheme?

Very often, yes. Your oil boiler grant may cover the full cost of installing a new oil boiler but the calculation of oil boiler grants is different for every home. Factors which affect the value of your oil boiler grant include the size of your home, how many bedrooms it has, how many external walls there are, whether it has solid or cavity walls and how well it is insulated. In short, the greater the reduction in carbon emissions you achieve (over the lifetime of your new boiler), the higher your oil boiler grant will be.

  9. Who qualifies for Oil Boiler Grants?

To qualify for an oil boiler grant, you must live in your own home or a privately rented one AND receive one of the qualifying State Benefits or Tax Credits AND have a faulty or inefficient oil boiler installed in your home. More information about oil boiler grant qualifying criteria can be found on the Eco Scheme page.
